EVALUATION- Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

When looking back at the preliminary task I feel like my final product has progressed and developed in quality and expectation comparison to the product of the preliminary. This is because since completing my preliminary task, I have conducted significant amounts of research into areas such as user targets, colours and fonts, and a range of other existing media products of the same type. With this it had given me a sense of direction as to which my final product should follow. This has taught me the necessities of what should be included into my magazine and what I need to consider such as conventions. For example the typical reader research taught the features that I must include in order for my product to effectively engage with my desired audience target. Also the analysis of existing products gave an idea of how other successful music magazines have been constructed, highlighting the similarities amongst those products which I can then in cooperate into my own.

I have also learnt the importance of planning in order to obtain a high quality final product. This is because unlike the preliminary task, before I went onto producing my final magazine, I ensured that I went through certain planning stages to allow the outcome of the production to be smooth. For example I made sure that I had a wide range of photographs to select from and had made mock up pages which gave me a visualisation of what my final product could like. I found this very helpful as it pointed out some errors in the way I had constructed my page allowing me to re-edit the layout and arrangement of my pages. Another aspect of the planning stage that I found extremely important was the user feedbacks. This is because I was able to learn what my potential audiences views are on my proposed designs and plans for my final product. Therefore looking back from the preliminary task right to the full product, I have learnt to use research and planning to advance and make my magazine better and improved.

I have also learnt how to use new technologies and more suitable software’s/programmes since the preliminary task. The use of these programmes such as Photoshop and InDesign has showed my progression in technological development and my ability to use them efficiently. Unlike my full product, my preliminary task uses basic images; fonts and text which makes it look amateur. I also constructed the preliminary task using Microsoft PowerPoint which is not design based software. This therefore means that editing tools and manipulation tools were not available, making it difficult to correct and alter and errors. Overall I feel like over the duration of the project I feel like I have learnt a lot from my preliminary task as my final product has been advanced exceedingly in comparison to it.

EVALUATION- What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

EVALUATION- How did you attract/address your audience?

In order to draw awareness and attract my audience to my product, I made sure that my audience would be able to access and stay in contact with the magazine in a range of places. By this I mean that I applied the theory of convergence which allows the audience to interact with the magazine brand via different ways and will cause my magazine to remain relevant. I was able to show this on my front cover by placing the icons of the most popular social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. I reckoned this to be a very significant way to address my target audience because young people are commonly entertained and seen to be frequently engaged to social network sites therefore it suggests to the audience that they can be kept up to date with musical information. Adding on to that, convergence allows the target audience number to grow as social networking is a cheaper and faster alternative to spread information and advertise the magazine.
Another way in which my product is able to attract its audience was by including “freebees” and posters. Due to the fact that my target audience are mainly unemployed students, by giving away free items it would increase their interests into the magazine because they will feel as if they are gaining more than what they are paying for. For example my magazine states that it includes free posters and give away ticket to concerts. I think by doing this it will attract the audience as they feel comfortable and will initiate a sense of excitement. As well as this the price of the magazine is not too expensive will persuade and encourage the audience to purchase the magazine.

The choice of images and colours is another way my product is able to attract the audience. The main images are meant to represent musicians and dominant figures within the music industry. This will attract the audience as they feel some recognition towards the magazine as they familiar with the faces. By using a “star”, it will help with the promotion of the magazine as it gives the young audience something and someone to admire. Contrasting and bold colours such as reds, yellows and greys are found throughout my magazine as it causes the pages to stand out. I found the use of certain colours and fonts as an efficient mechanism to attract the audience as young people tend to prefer striking images, colours and style to mass amounts of texts.

EVALUATION- Who would be the audience for your media product?

EVALUATION- What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

EVALUATION- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

EVALUATION- How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The genre of music I chose is mostly listened to by young black, afro-Caribbean. It also attracts other ethnicities just not as much as the former. Hip hop as a music genre is looked down upon by older people making it less likely for people advanced in age to be the targeted audience. My product has therefore showed that it is aimed at this social group and status as the main images represent and consist of young individual mainly from the stated ethnic group. A dozen of artiste from this genre rap about money and fame and this makes it more appealing to people in the lower classes because they are usually the ones that fancy that kind of lifestyle and will want to hear things that motivates them to aim higher. The font choice for the headings in my product represents this as graffiti is often embraced in the urban areas of a city where lower class and some middle classes are located. This will initiate a sense of familiarity and recognition for this social group.

In relation to Maslow’s Hierarchy theory, my product has been able to show people from the self-esteem category as I have clearly included brands and other materialistic things that are desired by people in this social group. For example across the front cover, contents page and double page spread, the models are wearing designer brands such as Ray Bans, Doc. Martens and Beats headphones. Such items are often related to unemployed students that are attracted to materialistic items therefore highlighting how my product has been able to represent particular social groups. In addition to this I have placed a low price on the front cover which shows that it is accessible by most people as it is affordable. Therefore my product has highlighted how this particular social groups has been represented.

PLANNING- Client feedback

Renee Owusu: Age 16

"I really like Jacqui’s concept because of the urban theme and I feel like she used the right colours to represent that."

Priscilla Amofa: Age 18

" I like the way Jacqui has grasped the concept of a conventional hip hop magazine and embedded it into her mock ups and flat plans"

PLANNING- Analysis of my logo

I used this website to generate the graffiti font type I wanted to use for the headings and titles in my magazine. Even though the website presented a range of graffiti font types, I decided to go with this font because it is the most legiable. I considered this to be very important as the reader would need to be able to clearly identify what is being said in the magazine in order to interact and engage with it fully. However the limitations of this website was that the cololurs available for the text is limited as it only allows me to use the colour black.

I then uploaded the image into photoshop to manipulate and edit the logo. I decided to keep it black however I made the 'A' bigger than the rest of the logo. By doing this i believe that it will draw attention to the logo and range of font size creates a feeling of disorientation which would attract the reader.

PLANNING- Contents Page Mock Ups

The contents page shows how I have carried on the urban vibe through to the contents page through the graffiti text. This would therefore also attract the young audience. I have included the image of one of the other celebrities that are featured within the magazine. By doing this it allows the reader to get an idea of what is still to come.

I have also divided the pages in the magazine into five categories to make it is easier for the reader to find what type of information they are after. As well as this I have placed the correct page numbers were each article can be located. The picture of the artist is very bold and striking which would instantly interact with the reader.
